It might be best to leave the silent shorts in Short Format Films, considering all the Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton shorts. Don't know if this is complete, but here's a link to the Chaplins:

A Natural Born Gambler is actually Bert Williams, not WC Fields. Given the title, that's an easy mistake to make. :)

@best to leave the silent shorts in Short Format Films

so, they would still be in the separate short_films coll (searchable, viewable that way). Question is, should they be in a grouped pile of silents too? Or, should a silent film coll only be for features?

Hmm. Where would people most likely think to look for short silent films: in a collection of silent films or in a collection of short films? I have no idea. Short talkies would still be grouped in Feature Films, wouldn't they? So it would be consistent if short silents were grouped with the silent features as well as Short Format Films.

Billbarstad, may I offer my two cents?

Good.

Personally, I would look for a silent short film first in the "silent" category, because that descriptor immediately separates it from all the other films in the archive, whether long or short.

How about a major collection of silent films sub-divided into shorts and features?

That certainly is a way to go about it, but no other collection in Feature Films is subdivided.

What do you think about putting a "Silent" icon in the upper right hand corner of all silent movies in existing collections, as Detective John Carter of Mars suggested, or should the icon appear on all silent movies?

I think adding some sort of "silent" icon to *all* silent movies could be a good solution. That way--regardless of the collection--a viewer could separate the two types effortlessly.

ok it worked out so all the ones from the threads except some chaplins (not done yet) say "silent films" in the corner- thx for help to all.
